peanut butter dog treatsDog treats are more than just a tasty delicacy for your pet. Many people consider a dog treat to be a specialized training tool. You may not believe this, but at my house a peanut butter dog treat can make both dogs sit on the first request. At no other time during the day are they as understanding as when I say the word “treat”.

Many people have used peanut butter treats to help with dogs that are nervous or troubled. The smell can often help keep the dog’s attention initially as they learn to associate the smell with the treat. A treat can often help create a bond with an older, newly adopted dog that might have trust issues. These treats could be a real win-win with a new dog.

Now I am not the most health conscious person, but I have a choice. My dogs are forced to live with the choices I make for them with respect to the food they eat. I feed them a high quality dog food but often wondered about the treats I fed them.  After trying several different types of treats, I found that peanut butter dog treats were their favorite without a doubt. Not only do they love the taste, but they are healthier some some other types.

Peanut butter contains protein, iron and calcium, which are found in high quality dog foods. These beneficial ingredients, when used in conjunction with a high quality dog food, can be enjoyable and beneficial as a nutritional supplement. When using peanut butter or other dog treats as a reward, remember not to feed too many. Like many things in life, too much can negate the benefits and actually be harmful.

I have often used peanut butter on a dog biscuit to help get my dogs to take medication. I have tried wrapping pills in bread or other items, only to find the pill laying on the floor when all else was gone. By using peanut butter, the pill stays in place and it is difficult for the dogs to separate the pill from the stickiness of the peanut butter. I’m sure this is also healthier than some other choices.
Making your own peanut butter dog treats can be rewarding if you have the time and space available to make these goodies. I personally am not the type of person to bake treats on a regular basis. Luckily, there are many commercially available dog treats that you can purchase online or locally. As you look for treats that your dog will enjoy, remember to consider the health benefits of each type. Not all dog treats are created equal.
